Synopsis of Lectures on Low Carbon Society

Energy is essential for humanity to maintain the convenience and comfort of our lives today, and is also crucial to sustain the economic activities of nations. Our choices of energy sources and uses also involve enormous impacts on the global environment. Air pollution and climate change from the burning of fossil fuels are examples of those impacts.

Japan's energy situation changed dramatically after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and subsequent accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Public debate in Japan today tends to focus on whether or not we should use nuclear power, but if we think about the increasing seriousness of climate change or observe that in some places air pollution is so bad that it even obscures nearby buildings, the bigger challenges become clear: How should we deal with energy in ways that minimize the environmental impacts?

Keio University SFC offers a variety of courses about the environment and energy. Below we introduce some of them.

With a focus on the issue of global warming, students in this course learn the basics from two key angles—science, and decision-making/action in society—to acquire an important fundamental outlook on the creation of a low-carbon society. Learn the basics of climate change issues, today's situation and initiatives in Asia, current status and issues about the creation of a new international policy regime to deal with climate change, policies and measures such as emission trading systems, trends of initiatives in Japan and other countries, ways to monitor and visualize emissions, voluntary actions by stakeholders, and more.

Business must fulfill a greater role if we are to create low-carbon, sustainable societies. Lectures are designed for participants to learn about the fundamentals and reality of environmental business, and gain a basic perspective on the current state of the art. Learn about environmental financing, environmental and economic policy in Japan, trends and issues for businesses that offer climate change solutions, the design of eco businesses, and more—all from an instructor who has been active on the forefront of environmental business.

Technology has a huge role to play in environmental solutions. Learn directly from experts about technology solutions and industrial systems that will hold the keys to solving energy and environmental challenges. Instructors include people actually involved in environmental solutions in major energy-intensive industries, including electricity, steel, and cement; researchers investigating environmental solutions in developing countries; and leaders in a variety of fields, including experts in carbon credit businesses.

This is a practical course aimed at helping students acquire a basic understanding of energy and environmental issues and acquire essential skills for analysis and the design of solutions. The course includes exercises to calculate energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in various sectors, an introduction to methodologies to calculate emission reductions from projects that shift to low-carbon approaches, trial calculations for solar power operations, and study tours to factories and facilities.

Acquire knowledge and techniques needed to develop policies for a low-carbon society. The aim of this course is develop the capacity to apply more realistic and efficient solutions to the challenges of dealing with climate change and creating a low-carbon society. Participants will join workshops to learn solutions-oriented planning and management techniques, role-playing of international climate change negotiations, interactions with key persons actually involved proposing and implementing solutions, and study tours.

Advanced Research (EG1):
Understand the efforts of industry and business communities relating to urban design and lifestyle design aiming to create a sustainable environment, and learn about green innovation in the design of social systems. Through case studies by guest lecturers who are practitioners in their respective fields, learn the current situation and challenges involved in technologies for urban design, construction, and social innovation that involve low consumption of energy and resources. Learn also about technologies to promote resource recycling, and technologies that help adapt to environmental change.


Environmental Planning + Policy

Using the research methodologies of the natural and social sciences we are developing advanced applications of geographical information technology in order to observe and analyze the effects of environmental change. Information gathered from these efforts is used to make policies and plans that will build capacity and resiliency in the face of climate change and the social transformation that result.
